Fellow Rotarians,

Today, America celebrates an extraordinary milestone - our nation's 250th birthday.

Like many of you, I have spent time reflecting on what a remarkable blessing it is to have been born in the United States. Yesterday, while speaking to our District RYLA students, I reminded them that they received an incredible "birth blessing". None of us chose where we would be born, yet we have been given opportunities, freedoms, and prosperity that much of the world can only imagine.

But blessings also carry responsibility.  

Yesterday evening, I rewatched Saving Private Ryan. As the movie ends, Captain Miller looks at Private Ryan and simply says, "Earn this." Watching it this time, I realized those words weren't just for Ryan. They are a challenge for every generation.

How do we earn the sacrifices of those who secured our freedom?

Not through words alone, but through lives of service.

Every time a Rotary club packs food, builds a playground, mentors a student, awards a scholarship, funds a clean water project, helps eradicate polio, or simply reaches out to someone in need, we are honoring the opportunities we've been given.

Rotary gives us one of the greatest ways to "earn it"- by using our blessings to bless others. We create lasting impact in our communities, across our country, and around the world. Perhaps that's one of the reasons Rotary has meant so much to me over the years. It gives ordinary people an extraordinary opportunity to use the blessings we've been given to serve others and Create Lasting Impact.

As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, let us pause to give thanks for those who came before us, whose courage and sacrifice secured our freedom. Let us also celebrate the revolutionary ideals upon which this nation was founded, that liberty is a God-given gift, that self-government requires an engaged and responsible citizenry, and that every person is endowed with inherent dignity and worth. Those ideals remain just as worthy of our commitment today as they were 250 years ago.

May we never take either our freedoms or our responsibilities for granted. Instead, may we recommit ourselves to leaving our communities and our world stronger than we found them through lives of service.
